Varzob Gorge is the main escape from Dushanbe's summer heat. Temperatures here are several degrees cooler, the air smells of juniper and river water, and the nearest waterfall is a three-hour hike along a mountain trail. Here's what to see, where to swim, where to stay overnight, and how to get there.
Why Everyone Goes to Varzob
Varzob Gorge begins eight kilometers from Dushanbe and stretches along the Varzob River, a 71-kilometer-long right tributary of the Kafirnigan River. The gorge was designated an official tourism zone of Tajikistan in 2000.
The Varzob River is the area's main artery. Dozens of tributaries flow into it, each forming its own side gorge, including Takob, Siyoma, Ovchug, Khoja Obi Garm, and others. Each contains hiking trails, springs, and secluded spots away from tourists.
The gorge is always cooler than the city, the air is cleaner, and the sound of running water replaces urban noise. During the summer, temperatures can be seven to ten degrees Celsius lower than in Dushanbe, which is why the area fills with local residents on weekends.
Gusgarf Waterfall
Located in a side gorge on the right bank of the Varzob River, Gusgarf Waterfall is one of the most scenic waterfalls in the Gissar Range. Water drops from a 30-meter cliff, breaking into thousands of droplets and creating rainbows on sunny days.
The trail begins at the 21-kilometer mark of Varzob Gorge near the village of Gusgarf. Vehicles are left there, and the rest of the journey is on foot: approximately eight kilometers one way, requiring two to three hours of uphill hiking. The trail is steep and rocky in places but accessible to people with average physical fitness.
At the base of the waterfall is a natural stone pool filled with icy water. It is possible to stand beneath the falling water, but visitors should be aware that the flow is strong and the water is cold. The best time to visit is April and May, when the slopes are green, wild tulips and rose hips are in bloom, and the waterfall reaches its maximum flow. The hiking season runs from March through October.
Recommended equipment includes trekking poles, water, and sturdy shoes with non-slip soles.
Secluded Trails
In addition to Gusgarf, Varzob offers lesser-known routes for those looking for fewer people and more nature. The side gorges of Takob and Siyoma are suitable for independent hiking. There is no tourist infrastructure here, only trails, rivers, and mountains.
Takob Gorge is located about 40 kilometers from Dushanbe. Summer temperatures are cooler than at the entrance to Varzob, and there are noticeably fewer visitors. Siyoma Gorge is more remote and includes several small waterfalls along the route.
Where to Swim
There is plenty of water in Varzob, but it is almost always cold because the river is fed by snowmelt and glacier runoff. There are two main options.
The first is the recreation areas along the road, which feature pools supplied with running water, riverside seating platforms, and equipped access points. Water in the pools is slightly warmer than in the river but still refreshing. The second option is natural swimming spots. Moving away from the road, visitors can find shallow sections of the river, natural pools among the rocks, and secluded riverbanks.
It is important to remember that the current is fast and the rocks can be slippery. Swimming in natural areas is recommended only where the riverbed is visible and the current is weak.
Recreation Areas and Infrastructure
Numerous recreation areas, resorts, and cafes are located along the road.
«Kohi Malika»
An upscale complex located 20 kilometers from Dushanbe. Facilities include a hotel, cottages, a restaurant, swimming pools, a sauna, and conference halls. Suitable for both family vacations and corporate events.
«Gulobod»
A recreation base located at the 33-kilometer mark of the gorge. Facilities include a hotel, indoor swimming pool, lake with pedal boats, conference hall, billiards, and a sauna. Evening entertainment programs are also available.
«Khoja Obi Garm» Sanatorium
Located 48 to 50 kilometers from Dushanbe at an elevation of 1740 to 1960 meters above sea level. The sanatorium was established in 1934. Its main feature is a system of thermal springs with water temperatures ranging from 65°C to 95°C, as well as natural steam containing radon. The facility specializes in the treatment of joint disorders and cardiovascular and nervous system conditions. A minibus to the sanatorium operates from the Vodonasosnaya district of Dushanbe.
How to Get There
The easiest option is a taxi from Dushanbe. Travel time to the entrance of the gorge is approximately 30 to 35 minutes, and the fare is around $6-8. It is also possible to travel by private car, as the gorge begins directly beyond the city's northern exit.
Shared minibuses also operate toward Varzob from several locations in Dushanbe. Since routes and schedules change, it is best to check locally for current information.
A direct minibus from the Vodonasosnaya district also serves Khoja Obi Garm Sanatorium.
When to Visit
Varzob is open year-round.
Spring is the best season for hiking: tulips and rose hips are in bloom, the waterfall is at its fullest, and visitor numbers remain relatively low.
Summer offers relief from the heat and is ideal for swimming and relaxing at recreation bases.
Autumn brings mild weather, fewer tourists, and comfortable conditions for walking.
Winter is quiet and scenic. The Safed Dara ski resort, the only ski resort in Tajikistan, operates in the Varzob district during the winter season.
